We presently have a 3 mo old female Lab/retriever cross and eventually , later this summer , would like to add a second dog to the family.(we've nearly always had 2 dogs).

We will be getting a rescue dog and are considering something about a year or 2 older..young enough to still want to play but old enough to avoid having to go through that rambunctious puppy stage again (we're both seniors now).

So far the reading I've done about getting a second dog involve introducing a puppy to an older dog.

What about the other way around?

Absolutely you can do it! My sister got a puppy and after he was a year they added a five year old rescue.

There's lots of information out there on introducing two dogs to each other. Here's one that looks pretty good:

If you go with a rescue they will be able to help you find a dog that will match well with your existing pup! You could also get the chance to introduce the dogs to each other before bringing the new dog home.
