I've noticed that it's getting harder and harder to find an old-fashioned buckle collar with holes to adjust the size. The trend now seems to be the quick-clip collars (the ones with the plastic catches that snap together) that adjust with a plastic slide.

Well, I don't like them! When we first got Zeus from the Humane Society, he came with a quick-clip collar. All he had to do was jerk on the leash once or twice, and the collar would loosen noticably. I had to keep re-adjusting it. I gave up on it after a few days and bought a nice leather buckle collar.

Am I the only one who's had this problem? I just wonder why they make those things if they tend to loosen so easily.

the cheap ones break..that is my biggest complaint and ususally at the worst time too. My favorite is the leather rolled collar that is sold at petco or petsmart. It doesn't wear the fur down, allows the skin to move freely underneath, cost an arm and a leg, and if you have to put a leash on quick you can clip on anywhere (it has a buckle too)

I buy all my equipment from this place www.rayallen.com.

I hate anything that can break when training so im there with you on this subject :)

I also hate generic 1" leather leashes they sell in Petsmart, Petco, etc. Those things tend to snap after 4-5 months of use. Well pretty much all stuff they sell is crap after few months of heavy use.

smkie--I have been wanting to try one of those rolled collars, but I wanted to hear from someone who used them first. Since you say they work well I think I will give them a try.

Both of the boys wear them, and I've never had their collars snap open, even with Dakota who will throw all his weight to the end of the lead if he loses control of his manners and wants to chase something. I guess it depends on the quality of the collar, because I've never had problems with the ones I use.

As for loosening, I keep their collars pretty loose anyway and never noticed loosening. Although Ripley's is probably frozen in place because he's had the same collar his entire life, and it's stayed at the same (smallest possible) size.

i have a quick clip collar. i bought it from this little family owned pet store in town. it cost a looooot more than the regular collars... i felt like i was buying a new dog -.-;;; but it stays the same length unless i change it... took a while to figure out too. and yoshi pulls on it all the time and it stays clipped. unless you really want a quick clip collar i'd buy a different kind that worked for cheaper

I have the adjustable collar for Hannah and I like it more than the buckle collars. I find if you buy cheap adjustable collars (which we did for Mack once) they will loosen if they pull. I buy the expensive ones for Hannah and she has no problems. I also bought one for Maverick too and it was great, the shelter had given hima really cheap on that kept loosening but once I bought him a more expensive one it was fine stayed right where I had put it.

I guess I'm lucky, because I've got one of those cheap Petsmart quick clips on Aubrey and haven't had a problem that I've noticed. Sawyer's collar doesn't have a clip or a buckle, it's a martingale that just slides right over his head.

Smkie.. I've never used anything but rolled collars for my Goldens. Yes, they cost more for good oiled ones, but last forever. I just kept passing mine around . Finally bought Chip one last year as I didn't have his size. Murphy's oil soap keep them going like the energizer bunny !! Flat collars are O.K. for short haired dogs, but I like the rolled for longer hair for reasons you stated.

I refuse to buy anything with plastic especially if it's going to be used to restrain the boys! These guys are strong, intense pullers and have snapped CHAINS, there's no way some lil plastic snap is going to not break. Also plastic gets brittle over time but it's hard to notice until it breaks. I prefer quality and metal and leather and nylon (especially leather!) LOL

I prefer the buckle collars because the plastic ones just seem to pop off and in the winter when we go for our long walks they freeze and then we found with my old dog that if he pulled at all the plastic broke. Yukon has not seen winter yet but I suspect it would be the same thing. I buy my collars at home hardware and they have the leather and nylon buckle collars.
