Hey everyone! First post here! ^^

I have a question about my 2 year old Siberian Husky. I don't know much about dogs and only recently have I met Max (a month or so). It's about his general wellbeing, and they are as follows:

1) When I go to sleep at around 10-11 PM, I would take Max outside. The temperature in New Zealand at night is usually 11-20ish Celsius degrees. I have a kennel outside too. There is no grass though, bark only with a few trees. He looks extremely sad when I take him outside, and he often hides somewhere at around 9-10 PM. My question is: should I keep him inside at night instead of outside? He sometimes sorta' howls in the middle of the night: is this serious or do dogs genearlly howl? o_O Would he be in emotional pain if I kept him outside at night? Sorry for such bland questions. =/

2) I often just keep food outside for him that would last for an entire day. Usually consists of corn beef mixed with doggy biscuits and the like. Is this healthy to keep it outside like this the whole day? Or should I have set meal times?

3) He is a Siberian Husky. Do I walk him enough? I walk him generally 2 times a week. I keep on a leash tho incase he runs off. Since I've only recently met Max, when I call for him he doesn't respond, so I have to keep him on a leash when on walks. Is it detrimental for his health if he can't run around without a leash often? The backyard is a small area too, and he can't really run around in it. Ultimately, HOW MUCH exercise does a Siberian Husky generally need?

4) When I eat, Max often just sits beside me with those puppy-dog eyes. Should I give him some of what I'm eating or is this just the norm for all dogs? Am I just feeding him too little since he seems to be ALWAYS after what I eat?

I still have heaps of questions. I don't really know where to turn. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks dog-lovers! ^^

By all means, keep him inside at night. Dogs are social animals that need to be with their family.

For the food, I would say that leaving meat out is not good. I would also make sure his diet is balanced.

For the walks, lots of dogs can't be kept off leash, so it's fine. Just make sure you do long walks with him, or you make him run in the house during the day.

For the begging, it's normal, don't give in.

I suggest you look online for info on huskies. I know some people will be able to help you here though. Sorry I wasn't much help.

1. Definetely keep him inside at night.

2. Don't keep food outside for him. Feed him in the morning and in the afternoon. I couldn't really understand what you're feeding him but it doesn't sound too good. take a look at the link for dog foods reccomendations.

3. Siberian huskys need rough 30-60 minute excersixze everyday. Remember they we're bred to pull sleds. Just don't excersize him too much in warm weather.

4. Nearly all dogs do that. Don't give him food if he does this, even if the food is okay for dogs. You should know if you feed him too much if you can't feel his ribs and you feel lots of fat. Too little you can see hi ribs (which is hard under all that fur). Perfect he has a sort of waist and you can feel his ribs.

Huskies are working breeds so they need A LOT of excercise... or so I read... how long are your walks? You play fetch with him at your local park, right?

Babyblue5290: I don't have a digital camera, but I'll try and borrow one from a friend sometime and post a pic! ><

Richie1234: sadly, he doesn't get as much exercise as I would want him to get. Mainly because of time constraints. =/ I'm definitely going to walk him a heck of a lot more now (gradually).

Umm... another quick question: Max is 2 years old and he's very VERY playful and disobedient. Again, to reiterate, I've only met Max for a lil' while, but I would like to teach him how to at least "come", "sit", "stay", etc. Is it still possible at this age? If possible, would it take longer than teachin' a puppy? (how much longer?)

Yes it is possible to still teach Max new trick and that would be very wise of you :)
And yes it will take longer, I don't know how much longer though. Young puppy brains can absorb a lot more information at one time than an older dog that is set in his ways and has learned that his ways work. Or at least that's how I think of it :p

It's possible to teach him commands now. It might take a little longer. Depends on how you teach him and how he reacts to it. Look it up on the net. You'll find lots of info on how to train dog. Also, it will help LOTS if you take him to doggy obedience classes. There he'll be able to meet other dogs and learn. Goodluck!!
