Our shepherds have always made it 13/14 years--I know that's not that much better than 12, but we've never lost one young--and they were all fed pedigree (blech).
Oh yeah, 13-14 definitely wouldn't be a surprise either, and obviously if I had it my way, he'd be happy and healthy forever. I know Aleron (who used to post on Chaz) had a GSD that was at least 14. I guess when I think of GSD lifespans I just default to 11-12 because all of the German Shepherds I've known have passed away around the 10 to 12 age range. Trent's granddam passed away at 11, but his dam and sire are both 10 currently and still kicking it. So here's hoping!!

I don't really want anymore dogs at this point. Four is almost too many but it works and I like the even number. The Next Dog won't be coming home until Emily is gone (she's 9.5 years old now and has always had health issues. The vet didn't think she'd last this long). I'm not sure how much longer she has but sometimes I feel like her time is close and other times she acts like a puppy.

With that being said, I have some ideas of what and when I want Next Dog. There is a breeder that I'm looking in to that I have admired for a while. She has a young dog that I think I'd like to have a puppy off of and she health tests which is very rare in the type of dogs that I like (ADBA APBTs). She is thinking about a 2016 litter with this particular dog. It might or might now work out but I'd like to have a better relationship with the breeder before anything happens.

There are a lot of other breeds that I want too, besides sticking with my APBTs. I seriously want a Standard Poodle. Bad. It would probably be rescue adult. I wouldn't mind a rescue Doberman either. When Bayleigh's gone and I want another little dog, it will probably be a rescue JRT or similar scruffy terrier. And I still do want another rescue senior Great Dane.

Definitely no immediate plans. I want to own my own house before I even consider another dog. I like having one but I dread the thought of two dogs at this point in my life.

I like German shepherds, maybe a Dutch or Belgian shepherd. I like thinking about ridgebacks and blackmouth curs (never met one but I think I'd like them), but I can't imagine not having a shepherd.

Anyways. Not for years.

My SO does not want two dogs, so I haven't made any plans. But if I had a choice, I would definitely get a female mini or klein poodle puppy in the summer of 2016.

Preferably a silver.

I have been jumping between breeds for a couple of years now.
I was seriously considering a GSD or Mal but I won't do that till I have access to frequent training to develop it as a Schutzhund dog.

Now I'm leaning heavily towards a Kelpie, a nice, drivey boy with a genetically solid temperament.
I'm going to meet a breeder in a couple of weeks when I go interstate that I've been loving on their dogs from afar from a long time.

Theres also a nearly-local BC breeder that is producing some really nice performance dogs and just got a new pup from Germany, she does ALL the early socialisation things I would want in a breeder.

Hopefully next year sometime, depending on what works with Quinn, work, possible service dog puppy raising, my roomate, my roomates dog etc etc etc.

Next dog will be happening this year or early next.

Next next dog will be when we "retire" (read: get burnt out) and start a new business venture with dogs. That could be in 5, 10 or 15 years. Who knows!

I finish my degree in April of next year. Depending on where Josh and I are financially and house-wise we might add a third (Oz and Ruby are my parents dogs). Rigby didn't turn out to be the great sports prospect that I had hoped for. She's great, but I can definitely handle a third.

I'd like a new pup while Cobain is still around. He's always been very good with body language and puppies. Ideally the pup would pick up on some of the good traits.

I am pretty much set on the breed, breeder, and the dam that I'd like a pup from. Unfortunately, I think this current litter is her last, so I'll have to find another of the breeder's stock that I like.

And of course this business venture will be in Minnesota, right? Right, good, thought so.

Right now it is a bit of a toss up.
Wife and I after a lot of talking have decided to wait till Mouse is 2 to 2.5yrs old, and his being only a few days short of 7.5 months give me a bit of time to bring her to my side.

Wife wants a Fila Brasileiro or a Tusa Inu.
I want another English Mastiff or maybe a Dogue de Bordeaux or Boerboel.

Either way it will be a new big baby.

This was me. I was still in university, had no idea where I wanted to be or where to go and what to do. I figured no way would it be fair on a dog coming into so much instability. But it worked.

There's always fostering, if the only thing stopping you is a lack of solid future plans. Temporary, free dog!

As for my future plans, none yet. The man and I have toyed with the idea of Bull Terriers, Staffies, or just another rescue that comes along. I'm interested in something smallish (25 - 35lb range) and sporty but not sure what yet.
Pfft... I just noticed this now, so, sorry about the late reply.

I'm basically clueless about my future dog-wise. Finical/money, living situation,& plans are my main issues-or at least that's what I'm predicting.

I've never really considered fostering, but, if it would work, I'd considered doing it. It would be a great experience before getting dog. Plus, it could lead me in the direction of what breed I want.

Well, speaking of NextDogs (but not really), I got the go ahead from my mother to get a second dog in the very near future. A big obstacle I have to consider in planning for a second dog is 1) the initial purchase price and 2) having someone who will be able to help me take care of the dog in times of emergency or while I'm moving. So having my mother's support in that would actually take a huge weight off my shoulders.

But why "not really"? Because this is under the condition that the dog is either a Pomeranian... or an Alaskan Noble Companion Dog. I DON'T EVEN.

I'm pretty sure no one in the history of ever, has said that.
I totally have LOL I had been THIS close to moving, too, before a family emergency turned everything upside down. I WANT TO BE IN MICHIGAN GODDAMNIT. So many GSD people and dog events there.
