I met a friend of a friend last week who used to have a BC, and is looking to get another puppy next year from a good breeder. She'd prefer a working line breeder, and I'd prefer to refer her to a breeder that does relevant health-testing. I'm not sure what all of that is on BCs.

Recommendations?

EDIT: Before anyone asks, yes, they need to be in CO. Or very very close. Her old breeder is in NM I think and I got the impression she wasn't interested in a ridiculously long drive to get a puppy.

When you say working do mean like, lives on a farm and herds sheep daily sort of thing? Or sports?

Because I found these guys, who show but also do tons of sports. But I know BC politics are weird and sports aren't real work and all that jazz. I also can't tell if that website is up to date.

A good place to start would be contacting the CO encompassing working border collie association: http://www.mpbca.org all of their officers are located in CO and could probably point them in the right direction. CEA and Hips are common health testing, TNS is more show but is gaining some recognition in working breeders. Epilepsy there's no test, you just have to ask the breeder about what they've produced/dogs related to theirs.

Farm bred BC. Sporter Collies are not her thing. She wants an intelligent, high-energy dog, not one on crack. I'm going to stop here because I don't want to insult anyone's dogs. :rofl1:

I'll check them out, thanks!

Isn't Brigadoon Border Collies in Colorado?
yes, but I'm getting the impression she wants a dog that is directly off a working farm... which Brigadoon is not.

I have the same requirements for next herder dog as well... I'm still up in the air about breed though.

Ahh. I know Brigadoon has very nice dogs, and I know she works and shows them, but yeah, not straight off a farm type dogs. Perhaps look into English Collies?
