Do you think our society is dog friendly?

I've found a massive difference between where I used to live and where I am living now in terms of dog friendliness. There are so many dog friendly places here, it's very cool.
- Sending out a plug for an awesome local cafe that allows dogs. Munchies in Hamilton, if anyone is ever in the area, I highly recommend it. We visited for the first time last week. We entered, were promptly greeted and told that the dogs could be off-leash if we wished (it's a small cafe).
Also, the food is great.

In certain stores I understand wholeheartedly why dogs aren't allowed. I would absolutely love to be able to take my dogs with me everywhere, but at the same time I don't want to be harassed by ill-behaved dogs.
And let's face it, most of the dogs out there are owned by people who just don't care enough to train.

A policy in place to remove unruly dogs may just be asking for trouble as well. People these days tend to think that their "precious baby is perfect all the time and can do no wrong ever." So requesting someone to leave due to a poorly behaved dog would surely result in some sort of rude comeback.

I don't think we could switch to a dogs everywhere society tomorrow and it wouldn't be without issue by any means. But the culture can change.

Occasionally when I"m out, of course we'll run into that person that hates everything. They hate the fact the sun comes up everyday, i'm not concerned about those people. But the overwhelming response when out is one of interest or admiration. It's not because i'm super awesome, but we can sit at a table and my dogs will lay by my feet and not bother anyone. I can have them offleash and they listen. when i tell them to leave something, they do, when I tell them to come, they do.

When we walk by the street and other dogs are pulling and barking and acting like fools, we sit and let them pass. Others notice that. BUT, it's gotten to be such a huge pain in the ass to do much with my dogs lately, we don't. We can't seem to go anywhere anymore, not even our open air farmer's market on weekends. I mean, they're on city streets, we're now banned from entire city blocks and for what reason? they're dogs. Cleaner and more well behaved than most adults out there, but still we can't go.

The idiots are still out there, they don't care. They're still making a bad name for everyone else. I wish it was easier to get out more places, because we'd do more. and then more would see how good dogs can be and when we're welcomed to come sit in an establishment and eat and spend time and money and the others are told to take a hike, people will notice.

The public becomes more accepting of the dogs that should have every right to go anywhere and they become less tolerant of those that want to carry yapper box in a purse or get pulled thru a line of people by big bad brutus that can't walk on a leash. Over time the public will realize that dogs aren't all just dogs.

Sure some people are going to get their feelings hurt. Accidents will happen, someone is going to step in some dog **** along the way, but things will change and get better. There are plenty of other places where dogs are much more accepted than here, and the people that own those dogs are better owners too. Why can't it be the same here?

I don't think we're dog friendly because we have botiques for dogs. It means dog owners like to spend a lot on their dogs. Doesn't mean they're accepted in society. There aren't dog clubs on every corner. There are some classes there are some dog parks, with a lot of bad owners and dogs that still don't have control or a very good relationship with their dogs. Sure there are shows and sports, doesn't mean you can take your dog off the training grounds anywhere else in the city. Doesn't mean you can go grab a bite to eat with your dog between rounds. Just because other dog people accept your dog, doesn't mean society is dog friendly.

I think it varies a lot by where you live and what your neighbors and local businesses are like. I feel like I live in a very dog-friendly neighborhood in a fairly dog-friendly city.

I say great, let them. Rude comebacks won't gain them or their dog's access anytime soon :) They'll either be shunned in favor of good owners and dogs or they'll adapt and train and build a good relationship with their dogs. The choice will be theirs. I'd like to see this transfer to children too. When you don't parent and the school's must, it would be nice when the teacher could just say back, do a better job at home and your precious will be more tolerable at school :)

I agree.

I will admit that I have taken my dogs to open air markets and flea markets where they technically aren't allowed and I have never been asked to leave lol. In fact a person who had an u rule dog and was asked to leave saw me as she was being escorted out and shouted "why are THEY allowed!!" Blah blah and the security guard actually told her that if her dogs behaved like ours they wouldn't have said anything to her ha ha.

Oh man. I did most of my growing up in Switzerland, and moved back to Canada. I was downright shocked at how little tolerance there is for dogs in public here in North America. We have miles to go.
