i really really need help if anybody knows what i should do. my puppy, (almost 10 weeks old) licked up some of the carpet cleaner i was using to clean the stains she left behind. its been almost 6 days now and everything she eats, she throws up... and shes losing a lot of weight. we took her to the vets almost everyday this week and they keep giving her fluid injections to keep her hydrated.
i really dont want to put her down... since i have a feeling she is getting better but i dont know what to do. i really can't let her go i love her so much:(. lately she had been throwing up her food that was still in her stomach... and just yesterday she started throwing up her food that had passed through her intestines and came back up. the vet thought there was some kind of blockage in her intestines... but honestly i think the carpet cleaner has severly damaged her stomach or intestines... what do i do? does anybody know? :(

What's in the carpet cleaner? Is it ammonia based? Surely your vet would know if it was that? Do you have a good poisons advice unit nearby, or a phone number! It would be a good idea to ring them up and ask what the effects would be like on a human then you would have a good idea if it was the cleaner that was making you puppy sick!
Can the vet not scan / xray her to see if there is a blockage?
best of luck

Oh please get a second vet opinion! This needs to be taken care of asap and if your other is not willing to look into it, then go to someone else. Please help your poor baby as soon as possible.

Please keep us posted on what happens. I wish you the best of luck and I hope she is ok.

Yes take her to another vet. That's horrible! She needs to have more done for her.

Have you been giving her electrolytes to help prevent dehydration?

And please come back and let us know how it's going. I think we are all really worried for the two of you.

Any News? I would have thougth that when this happened the vet would have contacted the central poison center for instructions on how to counteract the chemicls in this cleaner? and if the vet didn't then I would certainly get a second opinon. hope things are better, and we hear good news.

yes the doctor did xrays and bloodwork... my sister and my mum (both nurses) looked at the xrays and they didnt see any obstructions. then the bloodtest results came back, the vet said apparently... there is no damage to anything whatsoever... so basically hes telling me nothings wrong. 500 bucks worth of fluid injections and "office calls"... this is getting ridiculous... something OBVIOUSLY is wrong... no dog just decides to reject everything they injest.

yes id like to get a second opinion right away, my boyfriend really wants that but my mom says no what good would it do? and that the second vet will say the same thing, and it was cost more, but my puppy's life is worth more than stupid money, i dont care how much i have to spend, i want a best friend that'll be there for me when i need her hugs.

and for the carpet cleaner stuff.. it was "Shout" carpet cleaner. and just today Sheba pooped liquid instead of solids... well she hasnt had food in days so she can't really... but we are feeding her this stuff thats for calves and it seems to be helping. my mom thinks the vet knows whats wrong and just wont tell us the right info we want until weeks later... so they can milk money out of us knowing that we will not put her down unless shes in lots of pain. i will update on Sheba after the day is over.

I found this list of the ingredients in shout carpet areosol.

carpet cleaner

I would have thought if this is the same product you dog swallowed there must be some damage done? bearing in mind thhe ingredients here are in the areosol? it appears that the product itself may cause slight irritation, so I would presume if ingested it would do the same to the intestines, so maybe this is causing the vomiting and the loose stools? and that perhaps it will settle in time, as long as the dog is hydrated.

i don't know if this would help..but when Charlie my lab was a wee pup he got a type of hookworm that damaged the lining to his stomach. We almost lost him..the vet said to boil hamburger.pour off grease..make white rice and stir the hamburg in it after it was cooked of course..he ate that for a long time before he could handle dog food again..nutrical might be a great way of getting the nutrition back into him without having to "digest" the rough stuff while the lining of his stomach and intestines heal. Poor little guy, oh my give him a hug for me! i would fire your vet and let him know why. There are great vets out there!

make sure he isn't getting dehydrated..you can do that by taking a pinch of the loose skin and seeing how quickly it goes back to it's original shape. If he does get dehydtrated the vet can do an iv that is right under the skin..that way the fluid cannot be vomitted..it does make them a bit cold at first and i always held them against my skin to help warm the fluid up. They absorb it into the body as they need to. This is what we did with the parvo pups while they went thru the virus.

Foxy, what is the stuff for calves you are giving her? The electrolytes, or milk replacer?

I think you've gotten some good advice about going to a different vet. And I'm curious, since your Mom and Sis are both nurses, why doesn't the vet let them administer the subcutaneous fluids? That's how Dr. Swartout handled it when we were nursing my Gonzo cat through his FIV. Subcutaneous fluids are simple; not like an IV.

Smkie is a wealth of information on nursing dogs through stuff like this!

If your pup isn't doing well with milk, try giving her a little yoghurt too. The yoghurt will also help restore the balance in her intestines.

And go find another vet! ;)

We'll be thinking about you and your pup. What kind of pup is she, and what's her name?

When my guina pig had severe dyrieah (Dang I cant spell) We have her unflavored pedialyte. Its good to give anything to help keep off dyhidration, so you might want to try that,

i would definitely get a second opinion and also find a different vet. chemicals can be very damaging if not treated properly in a timely manner.

on a completely different note: throw out the ammonia based cleaner. ammonia is the substance that makes a sopt attractive to puppies and kittens to seek it our and pee on it again even after it's cleaned up. get a gentle enzyme based cleaner like petastic or nature's miracle, they are safe to use around pets and break down waste residue completely. :)

UPDATE******************
sheba's doing awesome now! we decided that we were just gonna keep giving her the stomach medicine & the calve "electrolyte" stuff... im most sure thats what it was... and im not sure why the vet wouldnt just let my mom or sisters give sheba fluid injections.. i guess they wanted to make money. but for two days sheba only had the medicine and calve food. eventually she stopped throwing up her stomach and intestinal contents through her mouth... she started pooping it out and she hasn't thrown up since.

the vet called the next day & asked how she had been doing... and so i told him, and he said she could start eating the meaty food again. so i tried that.. and to my surprise.. sheba kept it all down. its been 3 days now i think.. or 2.. and shes feeling better than ever. im so happy that she made it through. i also prayed to see maybe that could help me. you can never go wrong with praying. thanks to everyone who replied to me... ur advice helped actually.

here is a picture of my puppy sheba. she is a huskie-sheppard cross... shes gonna be a big dog!!
